The Major Differences Between Robusta And Arabica Coffee3 min read

You may not have noticed, but the proportion of Arabica and Robusta coffee in a coffee bag actually means a lot. There are great differences between these two famous coffee species that a coffee lover should pay attention to.

Caffeine and Chlorogenic Acid – The Main Points

It is common that people prefer Arabica due to its pleasant taste and rich aroma. Therefore, Arabica beans’ price is twice as much as that of Robusta. The difference can be explained by the content of each species. The Robusta caffeine content is 2.2%, almost double than Arabica at 1.2%. The small percentage gap results in a great deal of difference; because caffeine carries the bitter taste and thus makes the coffee more difficult to consume. Additionally, Arabica contains almost 60% more lipids and almost twice the concentration of sugar in comparison with Robusta.

Environmental Conditions: It Is Easier To Grow Robusta


It is clear that Arabica value is much higher than that of Robusta; yet there are still areas and countries producing Robusta, some even in massive quantity like Vietnam. The reason is: Robusta is easier to cultivate on the farm. It produces more coffee per hectare than Arabica, which means the cost of growing robusta is much lower. Furthermore, the extra caffeine is a chemical defense for the coffee seed as the quantity of caffeine in Robusta is toxic to bugs. Robusta root is also suitable to grow in tropical climate conditions, with higher temperature and more rainfall compared to Arabica.

While Brazil has been holding the first position in producing and exporting Arabica, Vietnam has led the way in Robusta. In 2018, Vietnam Robusta production is estimated at about 28.000.000 bags, accounting for 97% of Vietnam’s total output volume. By contrast, Arabica production accounts for about 4% of Vietnam’s total coffee production, and about 6% of the total coffee area.

To improve the value of coffee production, Vietnam might consider allocating more focus on the Arabica beans, whose exporting value is higher than Robusta’s. The government and domestic coffee companies have already realized this fact and are showing symptoms of taking the first steps in a possible grand shift, which is exciting for us to see in the future.
